Dream Dinner Party

Q: First thing’s first: guest list! Which three people—living, deceased, historical or fictional—would you invite?

If I could invite anyone to my dinner party, I’d choose Kermit the Frog, Julia Child, and Stephen King. Kermit would be the perfect dinner companion because he’s always supportive and full of wisdom. Julia Child is an absolute powerhouse, and I’d love to chat with her about her incredible career as a chef. And finally, Stephen King is a master of his craft, and I’d be fascinated to hear about his writing process and how he maintains such a high level of output.

Q: Where would you choose to host?

I’d definitely host the party at my own place. I’m about to move into my first solo apartment, and what better way to celebrate than with a dinner party? My dining room is filled with plants, so it would be the perfect ambiance for a cozy and intimate gathering.

Q: What’s on the menu? Are you ordering in or cooking up a storm?

I’m definitely cooking up a storm! Cooking is my passion, and there’s nothing better than sharing a delicious meal with friends. I’m planning on making a potluck-style dinner, so everyone can contribute their favorite dish. I’d be selfish and make it all myself, but I want to give everyone a chance to share their own love through their cooking. And of course, I’ll be making sure there are plenty of vegetarian options for Kermit!

Q: What kind of wine will you be pouring?

As someone who has recently made the decision to stop drinking, I won’t be pouring any wine. I know Stephen King is also sober, so it wouldn’t be very considerate of me to serve alcohol. Instead, I’ll have plenty of soda water and other non-alcoholic options available. And since Julia Child is a renowned wine connoisseur, I’m sure she’ll bring something special to share.

Q: Any tips for home cooks looking to impress their guests? 

My biggest tip for home cooks is to clean up as you go. There’s nothing worse than facing a pile of dishes after a delicious meal. This is probably bad advice, but open up the windows and unplug the smoke alarm. Cooking at home is so much harder for me because I set things off all the time.

Q: Is there a theme or any suggested dress code in effect?

I’d love to see everyone in their best grandpa/grandma cardigan. It’s a cozy and inviting look that’s perfect for a dinner party. Plus, who doesn’t love a good cardigan?

Q: How do you set your table to make it your own? 

I’ve been collecting some amazing vintage silver plateware from thrift stores, complete with lids and matching trays. I will certainly be using those for my dinner party. I love the old-school look of the dishes, and might even pour the sauce tableside for that extra special touch.

Q: Last but certainly not least, what’s cued up on the playlist?

For the pre-dinner prep, I’ll be listening to some of my favorite comfort music. The Traveling Wilburys and Huey Lewis and The News always put me in a good mood. And during dinner, I’ll be playing some of my favorite playlists curated by Jun Takah. He is a Japanese fashion designer  and has curated these awesome playlists with very specific moods. I’d probably queue up a couple of those and call it a day.
