Dream Dinner Party

Q: First thing’s first: guest list! Which three people—living, deceased, historical or fictional—would you invite?

First and foremost, I’d have to invite the legendary David Bowie. I’ve been a fan since I was a child, and I’ve always had this feeling that our paths would cross someday. This dinner is the perfect opportunity for me to sit down with him and hear his perspective on recent years. Next, I would love to have my late mother, Lynn, join us. She had an exquisite taste for meals and would undoubtedly get a kick out of being alongside Bowie. It would be incredibly special to sip wine with her once again. Lastly, I’d extend an invitation to James Turell, a contemporary artist known for his inspiring light installations, often incorporated in outdoor spaces. His expertise in creating stunning lighting will play a significant role in my upcoming answer.

Q: Where would you choose to host?

We’re taking this feast outdoors! Personally, I’m a huge fan of picnics and spending time in parks, so it’s only natural that I’d choose to host my dream dinner under a shady tree as the sun gracefully sets. To enhance the ambiance, I’d ask James Turell to work his magic and set up enchanting lighting that beautifully complements the golden hour glow we all adore. 

Q: What’s on the menu? Are you ordering in or cooking up a storm?

I have a little trick up my sleeve for the menu. Instead of taking charge in the kitchen, I’d call upon one of my oldest friends, Crissie, who is extremely talented when it comes to cooking. She has a talent for transforming humble ingredients into mind-blowing culinary creations. Not only does she have a knack for foraging and minimal waste, but her vibrant presence lights up any room. Her company would be a warm and welcome addition to this gathering.

 Q: What kind of wine will you be pouring?

Probably all of it. I’d ensure a range of wines, from delightful whites to rich reds, and even some remarkable non-alcoholic options. This way, every guest would have a chance to sip on something they genuinely enjoy. Personally, I’ll be indulging in a particularly nostalgic wine, the Chateau Bella from Austria. Each wine holds its own story for me, and this one in particular, is filled with cherished memories. Whenever I stumble upon it, it’s a delightful opportunity to reminisce. 

Q: Any tips for home cooks looking to impress their guests?

I’m the first to admit that I absolutely love cooking, but I may not be the best at it. Timing and trusting the recipe tends to be my stumbling blocks, often causing me to go off the rails. So, I guess my tip would be to find a trustworthy cookbook or recipe that you have confidence in and can diligently FOLLOW the instructions. Sometimes, you just have to fake it till you make it! 

Q: Is there a theme or any suggested dress code in effect?

The dress code is “relaxed picnic chic” if such a thing exists. I would encourage everyone to wear attire that allows for comfortable sitting on the ground, but with a touch of elegance. It wouldn’t hurt for everyone to pack a sweater, just in case the evening carries on, and perhaps an umbrella as the weather here can be quite unpredictable. Come prepared for anything!

Q: How do you set your table to make it your own?

Since we are outside, our table will be the lush green ground itself. Picture a charming display of layered picnic blankets, scattered pillows, and mix matched glassware and dishes. I’d sprinkle tea lights around the table, as no evening gathering feels complete without the soft flickering of flames. Oh, and don’t forget to bring some Tupperware, as in my experience there are always plenty leftovers after a delightful picnic.

Q: Last but certainly not least, what’s cued up on the playlist?

Of course, I’d ask Bowie to treat us to some of his early experimental work, setting the perfect tone for the night. As we progress, we’d dive into some lively tunes reminiscent of yacht rock, ensuring the energy remains high. As the sun bids us farewell, I’d transition the playlist to more ambient or slow jazz melodies, providing a serene backdrop for intimate conversations and allowing us to immerse ourselves fully in the mesmerizing light show designed by James Turell.
